On November 19, the Office of Research Education has an exciting session planned for the Tattered Cover series! Professor Catherine Lozupone and PhD candidate Brook Santangelo will present a talk about "The role of the intestinal microbiome in health."
Dr. Lozupone is a Professor in the CU School of Medicine Department of Biomedical Informatics and Brook Santangelo is a student in the Computational Bioscience PhD program. They are both cc'd on this email. In brief about their talk - The human gut contains trillions of microorganisms.
These organisms perform essential functions for health, including extracting calories from your diet, influencing your immune system directly, and producing metabolites from food that affect health not only in the gut, but of the whole body including the brain and joints. We will give a scientific primer on what is known about the composition and function of this fascinating community of organisms and efforts by the scientific community to try and target this community therapeutically.
