Local Authors

Thank you for your interest in placing your book in the Tattered Cover for sale. The store takes pride in presenting a diversity of voices on its shelves and places a priority on accepting the work of authors living in Colorado. Following the outline and terms provided in this letter will strengthen our support for your book and its potential for success with consumers. Please read this letter carefully and adhere to its instructions.

A book sells best and can be better handled by our booksellers when it conforms to customer and industry expectations for finished books. Books must be professionally published, have a printed and bound spine, display an International Standard Book Number (ISBN), have a suggested retail price printed on its exterior and have dimensions common to current trade publications for hardback and paperback books.

If your book is finished, meets the criteria outlined in this letter and is ready for sale, please contact our local and self-published author team by email at authorinquiries@tatteredcover.com or by telephone at 303-322-1965 ext 2780. Your team contact is the only person with whom you will need to speak about your book. Contacting anyone else at the store will result in confusion and delay.

Publishers: Please be prepared to provide purchasing information along with the book which will include a publisher-determined suggested retail price, discount schedule (Publishers determine the cost to retailers. Bookstores like the Tattered Cover usually receive a discount of 35% to 45% from the retail price.), returns information and publisher contact information including name, address, phone number and website or e-mail if available.

Self-Published Authors: We may offer you an opportunity to sell your book on a consignment basis. We ask that the Consignor deliver all items for sale to us boxed and containing a line itemized packing list and invoice. Tattered Cover agrees to pay consignors 60% of the retail price and retain 40% for each book sold.

Once we have a complimentary review copy of the book, please allow two weeks for examination. The local author team will call you with questions or discuss an order. (Note: The local author team requires about a week to return any phone inquiry.) In the event that we choose not to carry your book and you wish to have the review copy returned, please include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage. If we decide to carry your book we typically start with a very small order, one to five copies is common.

All books are received at our store in Lower Downtown. Please deliver the book to 1628 16th Street and remember to include an invoice with all publisher information along with the purchase order number that we have provided for you.
