Tattered Cover Film Series - Throne of Blood
Start: 2:00 pm
Sie FilmCenter/Colfax: Join the Tattered Cover Book Store, UCD’s College of Arts & Media, Colorado Public Radio, and the new Sie FilmCenter (in the Lowenstein CulturePlex, next door to the Tattered Cover Colfax Avenue) for an exploration of the world of classic movies, hosted by Colorado Public Radio film critic Howie Movshovitz at the Denver FilmCenter/Colfax. All programs begin at 2:00 pm. Admission is free, but tickets are required from the box office. Tickets are available one hour before screening. Parking is avilable in the parking lot off of Elizabeth or Columbine Streets. This month we’ll see the 1957 Akira Kurosawa classic Throne of Blood. One of the dangers of adapting literary or theatrical material to film is that the filmmakers can be too protective of the original and don’t expand their material into cinema. That is decidedly not a problem in this remarkable transition of Shakespeare’s Macbeth into Kurosawa’s vision of medieval Japan. While the film respects its source material, this project marries Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama to Japanese Noh theater. The energy of the film and Toshirô Mifune’s sometimes frenetic performance come right out of Kurosawa’s unique genius. (109 minutes) For information on the Sie FilmCenter go to denverfilm.org For a PDF of our Tattered Cover Film Series flyer, please click Tattered Cover Film Series flyer.
