Colfax Avenue: In honor of the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, founded by Barbara Kingsolver, we are pleased to present two Bellwether Prize-winners, who will join us for a special presentation and booksigning. Hillary Jordan, who won the 2006 prize for her novel Mudbound, will discuss and sign the new paperback edition of her novel When She Woke (Algonquin), a powerful reimagining of The Scarlet Letter and a timely fable about a stigmatized woman struggling to navigate an
America of the not-too-distant future, where the line between church and
state has been eradicated and convicted felons are no longer imprisoned
and rehabilitated, but "chromed" and released back into the population. Can’t make it to the signing? that running will be his life to the moment he must run to save his
life, a 10-year span in which his country is undone by the Hutu-Tutsi
tensions. “Benaron accomplishes the improbable feat of wringing genuine loveliness from unspeakable horror”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Historic LoDo: Craig Childs is a commentator for NPR’s Morning Edition, and a multiple award-winning naturalist and author. Childs will host a multimedia presentation and sign his new book Apocalyptic Planet: Field Guide to the Everending Earth (Pantheon), a combination of science and adventure that reveals the ways in which our world is constantly moving toward its end and how we can change our place within the cycles and episodes that rule it. “Craig Childs takes an Edward Abbey-esque journey across our rapidly changing globe. Apocalyptic Planet is lyrical, informative, and full of surprises.” —Elizabeth Kolbert, author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe
